Before returning to the office, Sadie and Brad stopped at Peet’s Coffee to order designer iced teas, where they ran into Blackwood’s assistant, Aisha Khan. The middle-aged woman made eye contact and shook her head, struggling to believe they had survived and were still heading into work. At some point, they would have to go through regular Bureau protocols following a shootout, but until then, the case was still open, and they were going full steam ahead.

“The whole office watched you two on the news,” Aisha said. “Blackwood’s pissed about the shootout, mainly because the FBI was involved and on TV.”

“But did we look good?” Sadie asked.

The question stopped Aisha flat, but it also changed her state. “Actually, yeah. But the detectives who went down… are they going to be okay?”

“We’ll see how they fare the night, then check on them in the morning,” Brad said. “Penn took a bullet in the shoulder and hip. Veil was hit in the ankle and managed to get out of the line of fire faster than Penn. It’s a shame. Both seem like good detectives.”

Had the van not been boxed in by neighbors, resulting in a shootout, and the KCRA news chopper not already been covering a nearby traffic accident, none of this would have been broadcast. As it was, the entire incident was caught on live TV. It would be memorialized for lawyers, the courts, and possibly a college course or a future docuseries.

“Blackwood spoke with forensics on the scene and relaxed some,” Aisha said.

“Was it the headshot that calmed him down?” Brad asked. “The bullet that accelerated the kidnapper’s death.”

She nodded and said, “Rocklin PD will be attributed with the kill, even though it sounds like you two scrambled his guts.”

“All clean shots,” Sadie said, referring not to the expected outcome of the shots by SIRG, but by her standards from the gun range.

“I’ll say,” Brad muttered.

Sadie covertly extended a fist to Brad, who saw it and fist-bumped it.

The barista called Aisha’s name, placing her coffee on the counter and sliding it toward her. “I’ll see you back at the office?” she asked.

“Of course,” Brad said.

“Good to see you, Aisha,” Sadie smiled warmly.

She grabbed her coffee, walked by them, and said, “I’m happy you two are okay.”

“Same, same,” Brad said.

They ordered their drinks, briefly discussed the case, and decided on the next steps going forward. At the very top of the list was to avoid Blackwood at all costs.

When the barista called Sadie’s name and then Brad’s, they grabbed their drinks, headed back to the office, and managed to avoid Blackwood and the others by heading straight to Cyber to meet with Tyler.

“Holy cow, Batman and Robin,” he said, looking over both quickly, as if checking for bullet holes. “That shootout on TV this afternoon? Epic. It’s all anyone can talk about.”

“What about Blackwood?” Sadie asked.

The question gave him pause. He sharply sniffed the air and curled his upper lip. “Yeah, so… maybe we don’t talk about the boss man,” Tyler whispered.
